His name and character design are based on the English zombie comedy film Shaun of the Dead (2004) and the main character Shaun Riley, who is often seen to be oblivious to his surroundings (often staring blankly into space). He also shares his appearance as well as his name with Shaun's actor, Simon Pegg.
